I am an assistant professor of economics at City St George's, University of London. Before that, I was a postdoctoral research fellow in economics at the University of Oxford and the Global Priorities Institute and a non-stipendiary research fellow at Nuffield College. Before that, I received a Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University and bachelor's degrees in economics and computer science from the University of Virginia. Before that, I grew up in Southern California and Northern Virginia.

I do research to try to help make the world a better place for all living things. Most of my work so far seeks to elucidate what we as a society should care about in principle and in practice (what I call normative foundations and normative heuristics, respectively), and how we can better understand and solve some of the most important challenges we face (what I call normative design). This has led me to think in depth about human welfare, non-human animal welfare, the possibility of infinite welfare, the effect of population size on total welfare, heuristics for improving the world, how to provide public goods, criminal justice, the design of transformative AI systems and the risks they impose, and the history of humanity.
